Pupil Leadership in Action: Celebrating World Children’s Day

This week, children led the way as we marked World Children’s Day—a powerful celebration of identity, inclusion and the rights of every child.
Although the official date is 20th November, we celebrated on 26th November to ensure that all pupils, including those returning from residential, could take part.
The day was planned and delivered by our Junior Leadership Team (JLT), who have been working closely with staff to prepare for our pledge to become a United Nations Rights Respecting School.
This important commitment was launched during a whole-school assembly led by JLT members. They spoke with confidence about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and what it means to build a school where every child feels safe, heard and respected. As part of the assembly, they also introduced our new Rights Respecting Class Charters, setting out clear expectations for behaviour, mutual respect and learning. These link directly to Article 28: the right to education, and reflect our belief that positive behaviour creates the best environment for all children to thrive.
To mark the occasion, children took part in a non-uniform day with the theme “Come as yourself!” Pupils wore outfits that reflected who they are—ranging from traditional cultural dress to favourite colours and sports kits—reinforcing Article 8: the right to identity.
A special lunch menu, designed by the JLT, celebrated flavours from around the world. Later in the week, pupil leaders joined a food tasting session with our catering team to help shape future menu choices—linking to Article 24: the right to nutritious food. Dishes such as butter chicken, shortbread and chocolate orange drizzle cake were clear favourites. Involving pupils in these decisions gave them a strong sense of ownership and impact.
As part of the day, pupils in Key Stage 2 also completed surveys to share their views on school life and learning—reaffirming Article 12: the right to be listened to and taken seriously.
We are incredibly proud of our Junior Leadership Team and all pupils for their energy, maturity and leadership. This celebration is one of many ways we are building a school community where children know their rights, feel valued, and are empowered to make a difference.
