Relationships and Health Education (RHE)
At Forest Academy, we are committed to supporting every child’s personal development, wellbeing and readiness for life beyond primary school.
From September 2020, the Department for Education made it statutory for all primary-age pupils to be taught Relationships and Health Education (RHE). Although RHE is not part of the National Curriculum, it is a legal requirement for all state-funded schools.
What is RHE?
RHE equips children with the knowledge and skills to:
-
Build healthy, respectful relationships
-
Understand the importance of mental and physical health
-
Stay safe online and offline
-
Prepare for the emotional and physical changes of growing up
At Forest, RHE is delivered through our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum. Biological aspects are taught in science, and values and beliefs are explored through religious education (RE).
RSHE or RHE?
The wider national framework is known as RSHE – Relationships, Sex and Health Education. However, in line with our Trust-wide approach, we use the term ‘RHE’, as sex education is not a statutory requirement in primary schools (beyond what is covered in the science curriculum). This ensures that our programme is age-appropriate, sensitive and aligned with the needs of our children and community.
Supporting Children’s Wellbeing
RHE plays a vital role in supporting mental health, emotional resilience, and self-confidence. It helps children:
- Develop empathy and respect for others
-
Understand different types of families and relationships
-
Recognise how to seek help and support when needed
-
Build positive attitudes that support learning and life success
Working in Partnership with Parents
We believe RHE should be a shared responsibility between home and school. Our curriculum is inclusive, respectful and designed to reflect the diverse community we serve. We welcome parent engagement and are happy to share resources and plans on request.
